Activities & Fishing Smithers
FishingKnown as one of the top world class fishing destination, Smithers can offer you an unforgettable fishing experience. An abundant number of lakes and rivers - the Bulkley River, Kispiox River, Morrice River and Babine River - will challenge your fishing skills. From salmon to Rainbow Trout to Steelhead (catch and release), you will find them all.
Canoeing - Kayaking - River RaftingFrom placid lakes to rushing creeks to powerful rivers, the Bulkley Valley offers many venues for paddling enthusiasts. The list is long: Lake Kathlyn, Seymore Lake and Tyhee Lake have good canoe put-ins. You can choose from a 1-day trip down the Bulkley Canyon or multi-lake routes of Nanika-Kidprice and the Swan Lakes. From narrow creeks to wide rivers, the Bulkley Valley offer a constant show of nature and wildlife, especially in the fall when the salmon are returning and the grizzlies are active. Guided tours are available from different Smithers-based companies or you can just rent a canoe or kayak for a relaxing day.
Horseback RidingExplore Northern B.C. the old Canadian way - on the back of a horse. Mountain View Trailriding is just 5 minutes away from the Lodge and offers everything from hourly rides to overnighters in the mountains.
Hiking & BikingEnjoy the beauty of nature with a backpack and your hiking boots or get on your mountain bike. There are endless possibilities for everyone, nice and easy trails to challenging climbing routes. Travel on historical mining trails or on wildlife routes, get in a helicopter and enjoy alpine meadows for a day. Local bike shops rent out bikes and help you with your trip planning. Guided trips can be arranged for you.
Mushroom and Berry PickingFor all the gourmets, Northern B.C. flourishes with a wide variety of berries and mushrooms. Huckleberries, blueberries, Saskatoon berries, wild strawberries, raspberries, high bush cranberries and more. The area offers some excellent mushroom picking. Morels start the season in spring followed by giant puffballs, inky caps, shaggy manes and many more.
Wildlife and Bird WatchingThe Driftwood area offers a huge variety of wildlife and birds. Black bears, moose, deer and coyotes are a common sight. While walking the trails close by the mountains you can spot grizzlies, wolves, caribou and in some areas, even elk. Eagles, kingfisher, blue birds, different species of owls, yellow-headed and red-winged blackbirds are only some of the many birds in the area.
Skiing and SnowmobilingSmithers is well known for excellent downhill, x-country skiing and snowmobiling. If you like powder - ski Smithers. For x-country fans there are over 40km of groomed trails at the Bulkley Valley Nordic Centre and more trails can be found throughout the valley. Hudson Bay Mountain is the destination for downhill skiing and snowboarding, for beginners as well as for experts. Snowmobilers will find a great selection of trails especially in the Babine Mountains (only minutes away).Lots of those activities you can enjoy on your own or you can book tours with local operators, some may require a guide.
